CHOICE THEORY FOCUS GROUPS - Des Moran
Morning 9.30 - 12.30
After a lifetime of writing, travelling, teaching, and counselling Dr. Glasser finally became convinced that Focus Groups were the only way that Choice Theory could be spread throughout the general population.
Des and his colleagues have shown that Bill was right: under the correct conditions Choice Theory can be ‘caught’ and when it is the results can be truly astounding – even in all-men’s groups!
This workshop will describe how:
-
Focus Groups can be set up and facilitated
-
How they impact on participants, including the facilitators.
-
Some research results on participants’ views after they had finished the Focus Group.
-
In addition Des will introduce somebody who has gone through the focus group experience and has lived to tell the tale - Living, it must be said, a far more need fulfilling lifestyle.
Des qualified in counselling and psychotherapy in 2009 and began private practice. He set up Audio Counselling in January 2010 and operates out of Blackrock Medical Centre, Blackrock, Co Louth. He facilitated a CT/RT Focus Group which was purely psycho educational and more recently a men only Focus Group. Currently he is involved in a pilot programme in the Tallaght area, the purpose of which is to improve the outcomes for men-at-risk of suicide.
LUNCH 12.30-1.30 pm
Where Choice Seems a Luxury: The impact of Choice Theory in the lives of prisoners - Michael Woods
1.30 - 4.00 pm
Have you freedom to choose in a place where there is no freedom?
Is there a time when the wheels fall off the behavioural car ...and it just doesn’t run anymore?
If you take away my freedom….do you also take my love, power and fun?
This workshop looks at the potential of using choice theory in a situation where the idea of choice seems derisory. If you are in prison, choices seem to be something other people have. Yet, as this workshop will demonstrate, Choice Theory can have a powerful impact on the lives of those who feel completely constrained in their lives. The workshop will allow us access to the perceived world of the Irish prisoner, and will give us an insight into the power of Glasserian psychology to change the lives of those in such situations.
This presentation will be of interest with those who work with any clients with restricted behavioural choices.
Michael worked in Microsoft for 15 years before deciding to follow his dream to become a counsellor and work in the caring professions. He is now an accredited Psychotherapist/Counsellor with 24 years experience working and studying in the Addiction field. He spent 15 months in Africa setting up a Treatment Centre and AA in Lodwar, a rural town in Kenya. He has been working in and around the prison system for the past five years.
